Introducing Fiona Garlick

Much of Fiona’s work deals with the concept of place, identity and colonialism, and the vestiges of colonialism on the New Zealand landscape.

Fiona is passionate about sculpture being a public experience and has exhibited in many outdoor sculpture shows, amongst them Stoneleigh Sculpture in the Gardens, where she was introduced to members of Medal Art New Zealand (MANZ). This collaboration has allowed her to develop and refine her skills in the art of bronze sculpting and she exhibits annually with MANZ at Artis Gallery in Auckland. Charm Bracelets have been a recurring theme in Fiona’s work. Her first one, Giant Charm Bracelet (2006), made from junk and found objects has been recreated in many different iterations.

Lockdown saw a renewed interest in this theme, and resulted in the Talisman body of work for the RenewArt Exhibition. As with most of her ideas, the work lends itself to being a larger scale public art work; a half hidden treasure emerging from the earth in a public garden somewhere.
