Neville Porter
Project Title: Off-frame: Shades of Aotearoa
Practice: Photography
The Experience: Off-frame: Shades of Aotearoa is a series of five photographs exploring the beauty and abstraction found in the textures of the New Zealand landscape. Each image is shown in two forms: small, sharp prints on classic photo paper, framed together like a filmstrip, and large-scale prints on Japanese washi paper, suspended and unframed, letting light play across their fibres.
The contrast between the small, legible frame and the large, immersive prints invites viewers into a back-and-forth, wondering if this is an intimate detail, or a vast landscape. The washi paper itself echoes the grain and relief of the land, opening a dialogue between traditional landscape photography, abstraction, and the centuries-old craft of washi.

About the Artist:
For more than thirty years Neville Porter has captured New Zealand's landscapes, developing a very personal view, seeing beauty in the off-frame, in what exists beyond the landmarks: the shifting atmosphere, details, and fleeting moments.
Neville's photographic passion extends to printing. In 2018, his practice took an important turn when he first used Japanese handmade washi paper. His photographs began existing as physical objects, not only capturing landscapes' shapes and colours, but textured, with light seeming to penetrate the paper's fibres.
